The Star Garments Group is one of the largest apparel manufacturers and exporters in Sri Lanka. Founded in 1978 by a US company in the first export processing zone in Katunayake with the objective of capitalizing on Sri Lanka’s shift to an open economy, the company began with just one [01] factory and 300 employees. Star Komar, has today grown to consist of ten [10] factories and over 8,000 employees – becoming a key exporter for major markets in the USA and Europe.

Today, it is one of the key players in the Sri Lankan apparel industry, contributing heavily to the nation’s economic growth, through its decades of experience backed by solid and transparent business practices, internationally sought-after partners and its evolving employee mantra of fairness, progress, and trust.

Employing a team of dedicated associates whose core competencies are in maintaining the highest standards, ensuring timely deliveries, and providing individualized customer service to a variety of premier global brands. Star Komar prides itself in practicing forward-thinking Human Resources (HR) practices to ensure the progression of employee aspirations and careers.

Sewing Associates provided with the opportunity to work at Star Komar, are given three [03] main career paths to select from – Technical, Quality, and Production. As they successfully showcase their ability to take on more responsibility, employees are given the opportunity to attend SDP (Supervisor Development Programs) and TDP (Technical Development Programs) – that encompass multiple hours of learning study courses and workshops conducted during working hours. As they further progress in their careers, EDP (Executive Development Programs), MDP (Management Development Programs) and “Leadership Training” is also provided. Apart from compulsory training programs, employees are nominated for various other soft skills and conceptual skill programs, periodically.

Apart from the regular machine training, there are personality building programs available for Sewing Associates. One popular program is “Be A Star” which is given to every newcomer within the first six [06] months of work. Employees are also provided with library facilities and various sessions organized on life education for employees.

Employees are also provided with the opportunity to spread their wings through interests, activities, and hobbies such as internal events to showcase the talents of employees in each factory (example: singing, dancing, drawing, drama, compeering, sports, etc). This positive reinforcement has also led to an employee with the talent to compere becoming a TV presenter. Star Komar employees are also given the opportunity to represent the company via Sports Competitions (netball, cricket, volleyball).

Star Komar was awarded a token of appreciation from Marks & Spencer in 2019 as part of their Marks & Start program for empowering and employing 47 differently-abled employees in plants that manufacture for M&S.
